A Movement for women’s Empowerment – Women’s Self Help Groups. Actually Shanthinikethan Society is the pioneer. We have motivated as many as 700 SHGs throughout Shimoga District, Karnataka and in 2002 we were awarded a shield recognizing us as the best NGO by NABARD, taking into account WOMEN’S SHGs motivation and Management. Men were also formed in the agricultural sector. At one time, there were nearly 100 such groups. At present these groups are organised under different Federations and managed by themselves with necessary Goverment and Bank linkages.
we are actively involved in the activities of Indian Farmers Movement (INFAM), a National level movement for the protection of farmers' interests. In several villages of three taluks, we have formed self-help groups of farmers with clear marketing orientation of their own farm produces. Hide

2.Gokul Dairy Development project

Cattle Dairy Development Project has been a very ambitious and pioneering project introduced by Gokul Farm at Anandapuram in 1987 to improve the quality of the local cattle through artificial insemination with imported high pedigree semen. This was a dairy upgradation program of the ‘Malnadu Gidda’ cattle of the rainforest Karnataka and the local buffaloes with the world’s best genetic material. (net result after 13 years of motivation and promotion: over 65000 cattle crossbreeds and buffaloes to the number of over 40000)

As a result, thousands of calves have been born and there is almost five fold improvement in milk production in the first generation itself. By way of introducing modem methods in farming, distribution of high yield seeds and seedlings, fodder seeds, promotion of rubber plantation, horticulture and animal husbandry, the project has created a very definite wave in the district of Shimoga vibrating towards the achievement of self-sufficiency.

3.Joint Forest Protection and Management (JFPM)
Project location: Anavatty, Anandapuram, Iduvally, Umblebylu and Baharavathi taluks of Shimoga District, Karnataka, India

Two and a half years of JFPM [Joint Forest Protection and Management] experience of linking the people, the Karnataka Forest Department and NGOs and jointly promoting plantation, protection and promotion has been well documented. Shanthi Nikethan society was responsible for promoting 110 Village Forest Committees in a period of Five and a half years in different taluks of Shimoga. Formation and promotion of more than 150 Self Help Groups(SHGs) was another specific characteristic of this project. SHGs were granted revolving fund and support for income generation program under this project. More than 85 rural people were employed over a period of 5 and half years in this project with necessary trinings on skill and knowledge development.

In view Of Strengthening them, Shanthi Nikethan Society has taken a number of definite steps since June 2000. It has also formed a team of resource persons in promotion of this vital set up. It has just finished a round of trainings to the district Panchayat elected members and undertaken and well documented a study tour to Kerala to study the participatory planning system actively floated there. There is also a CORE TEAM consisting also of the elected members of the Hobli (region)

5.Rural HealthCare
Project location: The entire Shimoga District, Karnataka, India
Implementing Organisation: Shanthi Nikethan Society, Shimoga
A team of 12 Registered Nurses under the supervision of an MBBS doctor with Gynaecology specialization attended to 7 of its rural bases where they ran also a dispensary for the rural poor in each base. Outreach programs were also part of their weekly routine. 10s of thousands of minor ailments used to be treated annually. With the new trend of peoples’ sensibilities towards investigation based treatments, and specialization some of these centres became irrelevant. But a few of them are rendering basic health care.
The ophthalmic clinic Anvatty village, Shimoga became an intruement to lead 1420 disadvantaged rural cataract pateints into the ray of Hope and Light.
Village based campaign against HIV/AIDS was conducted by Snehadana Society in Luxettipet, Jannaram and Dandepally Mandals of Adillabad District, Telangana State, India.

Shanthi Nikethan Society is promoting clear orientations in Organic farming. It has a 7-acre demonstration plot in Organic Farming in Anavaty village of Shimoga Ditstrict. It was the responds of Shanthi Nikethan Society to the growing national awareness among the middle class consumers and correspondingly among a considerable number of big and small farmers to go organic in their farming practices, and less polluting and healthier ways of living. We are one among the founding N.G.O.’s of the prestigious Indian Organic Certification Agency. Father PV. Joseph founder of the very first Indian Organic Certification agency – INDOCERT (www. Indocert.org) and a very first producer company for organic agriculture- IOFPCL (www.iofpcl.org) hails from the MCBS Zion Society.
Introduction of Orgnanic cotton cultivation in all the villages of Luxettipet Mandal, Adilabad Disttict, Tenlangana by Snehadana Society, brought a better income to the rural households and made the cultivation ecofriendly.
